There are many famous regions of Italy that are perfect for slow journeys but very few, if any, can compare with the mountains south east of Rome. Abruzzo is a walking and cycling paradise and, happily, far quieter than many well trodden regions in Italy.
Peppered with tiny medieval villages and beautiful architecture, crossed by ancient trails and home to bears and wolves, this corner of Italy is perhaps the most surprising of all. And whilst landscapes are the primary draw, exquisite Italian hospitality, hearty mountain food and Montepulciano reds are just as appealing.
